CALL/ACAMS is proud to express our sincerest congratulations to Lindsay M. Lyster, Q.C., of Moore Edgar Lyster LLP, and one of our members, on her appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia.

This is a well-deserved honour for Justice Lyster. Her contributions to labour and human rights law are too many to count, and include playing a key role in advancing trade unions’ constitutional rights as intervenor counsel before the Supreme Court of Canada in significant victories of recent years: Alberta (Information and Privacy Commissioner) v. United Food and Commercial Workers, Local 401, 2013 SCC 62; Mounted Police Association of Ontario v. Canada (Attorney General), 2015 SCC 1; Saskatchewan Federation of Labour v. Saskatchewan, 2015 SCC 4.

In addition to her counsel work, Justice Lyster has contributed countless hours to legal education. She wasan adjunct Professor at the UBC Allard School of Law, where she taught labour arbitration, administrative, human rights and constitutional law. She also taught regularly at the Canadian Labour Congress Winter School and cochaired CLEBC’s Annual Human Rights Conference. She also offered her time and wealth of experience as a panelist at CALL’s Victoria and Montreal conferences, among numerous other conferences and panels.

Justice Lyster also acted as pro bono counsel for a number of non-profit social justice organizations including theBCCLA, West Coast LEAF, and the Community Legal Assistance Society. She also led the BCCLA as President forseven years.

Prior to joining Moore Edgar Lyster LLP in 2010, Justice Lyster adjudicated and mediated hundreds of human rights complaints and rendered over 500 written decisions as a member of the BC Human Rights Tribunal.

We refer CALL/ACAMS members to the government’s press release on Justice Lyster’sappointment: https://www.canada.ca/en/department-justice/news/2020/06/government-of-canada-announces-ajudicial-appointment-in-the-province-of-british-columbia0.html.

On behalf of CALL, we wish Justice Lyster all the best and we look forward to the opportunity to celebrateher achievement with an in-person gathering, when we are permitted to do so again.

The CALL conference scheduled for June in Halifax has to be cancelled. We were informed that under the force majeure clause in our contract, CALL will now receive their full refund from the Westin Hotel in Halifax and if you booked a hotel room you will receive the cancellation notice from the Hotel shortly. We hope to rebook in Halifax for 2022 as the local committee had a fabulous conference planned.

All CALL members will be fully refunded by CALL for the Conference registration fees and we will be making these arrangements shortly.

Given all the uncertainty around COVID 19 and competing work and financial demands on our members in this volunteer run association, it is not feasible to postpone to a fall conference or a virtual conference. Instead we hope everyone will put their energies into the 2021 conference in Saskatchewan for next year and have it twice as good.

We thank everyone on the local committee as well as the agenda and other committees who were working hard on the conference for all their excellent work.

The 2020 CALL/ACAMS Annual Conference will take place in Halifax, June 11-14, at the Westin Nova Scotian. At the bottom of this email you will find a link to register in our room block at the hotel. Childcare will be available, with advance notice only, at no charge during the Conference proceedings.

This year's Conference will present a comprehensive, critical and timely review of legal issues of significance to all those who represent and provide legal counsel to trade unions. The Conference will feature many of the country's leading labour lawyers and academics, including practitioners who have argued many of the cases to be discussed. There will be a mixture of plenaries and workshops, with simultaneous interpretation in both French and English for all sessions (approval is being sought to accredit sessions for mandatory legal education credits).

The Conference's Theme is "The Only Constant is Change: Labour Law in an Age of Disruption". Specific Topics will include:

·      10 Minute Labour Lawyer – An Overview of Significant Labour Law Cases of the Past Year

·      ABC's of Collective Bargaining

·      Whatever Happened to Freedom of Association?

·      Privacy in the Digital Era

·      Ethics and Professional Development for Labour Lawyers

·     (Still) Precarious – the New Economy of Work

·      Supreme and Appellate Court Update

The Conference will take place at the Westin near the waterfront in downtown Halifax. There will, of course, be the much-anticipated social activities, including a cocktail reception at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, and an evening of dining and dancing at Pier 21 (the Canadian Museum of Immigration). In addition, on Thursday afternoon, there is an optional Peoples' History Tour of Halifax [K’jipuktuk] - a bus tour run by a local non-profit that tells the real history of a city that has always been a space of social struggle. With stops at the lesser known sites and analysis not present in the dominant narratives, this tour will be a journey through the history of oppression, rebellion, colonization and reclamation.
