Peter Engelmann is a partner in the law firm of Engelmann Gottheil in Ottawa. He has practiced law since 1982 in Alberta and Ontario acting for unions and employees in labour, human rights, pay and employment equity, and employment and Charter litigation. Mr. Engelmann has appeared as counsel before a variety of administrative tribunals including Human Rights Tribunal, labour boards and arbitrators. He has also appeared before all levels of Ontario Courts, the Federal Court of Canada and the Supreme Court of Canada.

Mr. Engelmann is a regular presenter at conferences and co-author of articles. He is also a co-author of Trade Union Law in Canada.


Jo-Ann Kolmes

Jo-Ann Kolmes is a partner at Chivers Carpenter in Edmonton, Alberta, working primarily in research and litigation/arbitration support. Chivers Carpenter represents trade unions and individual claimants in the areas of labour law, employment law, human rights, occupational health and safety, workers’ compensation, Charter litigation, etc. She has worked on judicial review applications, appeals, civil litigation, arbitrations and human rights hearings.

She was a member of the legal team that represented Delwin Vriend and Alberta’s gay and lesbian community in the Charter challenge to Alberta’s human rights legislation, which excluded sexual orientation as a prohibited ground of discrimination. She is currently serving on an Alberta Law Reform Institute committee reviewing the judicial review rules in the Alberta Rules of Court, and is Co-Chair of the Administrative Law Section (Northern Alberta) of the Canadian Bar Association for 2004-2005.

She has served on the executive and has been involved in the international committee of the Canadian Association of Labour Lawyers/Association canadienne des avocats du mouvement syndical. She has also been involved in LEAF Edmonton and the Amnesty International trade union urgent action network.
