Ritu joined Chivers Carpenter in the
fall of 1998 and became a partner in 2002. She practices in the areas of labour
and employment law, public law (constitutional law, human rights, and
administrative law), and related civil litigation. She has acted as counsel for
the Director of Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission, and the Office
of the Information and Privacy Commissioner. Ritu has appeared before a variety
of boards and tribunals, all levels of court in Alberta, and in the Supreme
Court of Canada.
Ritu has been a presenter at
numerous conferences and panels including the Centre for Labour-Management
Development, Lancaster, Canadian Bar Association. She has been a lecturer in
Constitutional Law and Labour Arbitration at the University of Alberta, Faculty
of Law. She is the Independent Chairperson to hear serious disciplinary
offenses at the Edmonton Institution for Women. Most recently, Ritu has been a
member of the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Alberta (2002 –
2003).
A graduate of the University of Toronto
Law School, Ritu has published several articles in the area of constitutional
law. Prior to her career in law, she was an Intergovernmental Officer with the
Alberta Department of Federal and Intergovernmental Affairs involved from a
policy perspective, in constitutional and federal/provincial issues. Ritu is
the past Chair of the National Constitutional and Human Rights Law Section of
the Canadian Bar Association and has been extensively involved in the
Constitutional Law/Civil Liberties Section of the Canadian Bar Association
(Northern Alberta) in Edmonton. She has been active with the Women’s
Legal Education Action Fund (LEAF) both as counsel for LEAF at the Supreme Court
of Canada (Ewanchuk, Shearing), as past Chair of LEAF Edmonton (1995-97)
and as a member of the National Board of LEAF (1995 – 1997). She has also
been involved on the Board of a local theatre company for several years (1998
– 2002).
